Work is, generally speaking, serious business. But if we learned anything from nine seasons of The Office, it’s that there’s plenty of humor to be found in it as well. And what better day to hunt for the humor than April 1st?

Take skills for example. At Lightcast, we’re serious about skills. So serious that we’ve built the world’s most comprehensive skills taxonomy: a living library of over 34,000 skills that’s updated every few weeks to capture the evolving language of today’s fast-changing labor market.

But let’s be real: Sometimes skills can sound downright silly — especially when they relate to an industry or technology you’re not familiar with (yet!).

So, just like last year, we’re here to illuminate the labor market, one funny-sounding skill at a time.

While still heavy on tech & software skills (to be fair, they are the goofiest sounding), this year’s list is a bit more expansive than last's, with representation from fields like law, health care, urban design, and even logistics & material handling.

As always, you can click on each skill to view it in the Lightcast Skills Taxonomy, along with labor market insights like related job titles, employers, and posting trends. And, as a reminder: If you don’t see a skill you're looking for, you can suggest it! We’re always updating our taxonomy to capture the skills that matter to our clients and partners as you work to solve workforce challenges and unlock opportunity.

Without further ado — here’s 13 (more) skills that sound like one thing, but mean something else.

Newman

What it sounds like:  The mailman from Seinfeld who doesn’t work in the rain.

What it is: A command-line collection runner for Postman (an API development platform), which enables automated testing and execution of Postman collections. Newman is used to integrate API tests into continuous integration workflows and to perform scheduled or repeated tests without using the Postman application.

HotSOS (pronounced: “Hot Sauce.” Seriously, that’s how they pronounce it)

What it sounds like: The reddish-orange liquid that magically turns a crispy chicken sandwich into a buffalo chicken sandwich.

What it is: A cloud-based hotel management software that helps hotels and resorts streamline their workflow processes, improve guest experience, and optimize overall operational efficiency. It enables hotel staff to track and manage guest requests, housekeeping schedules, maintenance tasks, and other critical aspects of hotel management, all in one centralized location.

Fun fact: Over the past five months, the top job title for postings requesting HotSOS is Front Desk Agents and the top employer posting for these roles was Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts.

Dental Therapy

Bacula

What it sounds like: Lesser-known sibling of the famous blood-sucking vampire

What it is: An open-source backup and recovery software that is designed to manage large amounts of data across multiple computers, servers, and networks. It also allows administrators to automate backup processes and schedule backups to run at specific times, ensuring that backup data is always up-to-date and easily recoverable in the event of a disaster.

Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium

What it sounds like: Nothing. This sounds made up. Like something from the script of a sci-fi movie (Engineer: “Captain, the ship is in danger!”  Captain: “Activate Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium…stat!”)

What it is: A framework used in economic modeling that incorporates random shocks and time dynamics to analyze the behavior of economic agents over time. Often applied to evaluate economic policies, forecast economic trends, and assess the impact of uncertainty on economic outcomes.

Motion Arguments

What it sounds like: Disagreements over whether or not someone moved. Especially common in certain childhood games (e.g. “Red Light, Green Light” or “Simon Says”) where unauthorized movement can be grounds for disqualification.

What it is: Specialized skills used in legal proceedings, particularly in courtrooms, where lawyers use persuasive language and logical reasoning to convince judges or juries to rule in favor of their clients. These arguments involve presenting evidence, precedents, and legal principles to support the claims made by the lawyer.

Fun fact: As of March 2026, there are over 1,600 U.S. job postings listing this skill for roles like Litigation Attorney and Insurance Defense Attorney.

Demand Draft

What it sounds like: What my boss does every time I miss the deadline for an article (Just kidding! My boss is great and very understanding when I get behind.)

This skill encompasses the understanding of disk management and data recovery processes, allowing for the efficient duplication of data across multiple devices.

Traffic Calming

What it sounds like: When you’re driving, and you come to a four-way stop, and the person in front of you isn’t going, but it’s their turn to go, and other people are waving at them to go, but they won’t go, and you have to take a really deep breath and try not to freak out because you’re late to work and you wish they would JUST GO ALREADY!!!!

What it is: A specialized technique used to slow down vehicle traffic in residential and urban areas in order to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This technique encompasses a range of strategies such as installing speed humps, chicanes, roundabouts, and other physical barriers that encourage motorists to drive at slower speeds.

Fun fact: The top three job titles posting for this skill in the past five months are: Traffic Engineer, Transportation Engineer, and Civil Project Engineer.
